My mom was the biggest influence!
My friend and I were bored so we found the old stash of hooks, some baby yarn and a book and tried to decipher it. We spent hours making a granny square while sitting cross-legged on her bedroom floor. She was pregnant, I think that had something to do with it, LOL. And that was it!
I was disabled from my job that I had been at for 17 years. I really needed something to do so crocheting was one thing that I was able to pick up and learn on my own. I tried knitting too but I wasn't able to learn that quite so easily.
